Several drivers continued their dominating seasons this week in the Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Josh Morris, of Fredericksburg, Va., earned his fourth win of the season in the Legend Car Young Lions feature event. Concord native Justin Carroll jumped to an early lead, but before a lap could be completed, Mooresville’s Nick Drake flipped end-over-end in Turn 3 bringing out the red flag. The single-file restart put Carroll back in the lead and left Thomasville’s Adam Burton trailing close behind.

The battles for position were hard-fought throughout the 28-car field. Morris was one of the cars making a charge for the top position, as he closed quickly on the second-place car of Burton. By Lap 8, Morris was able to make the pass on Burton for second position. With five laps to go, the leaders began to close on lap traffic. This allowed Burton to keep his momentum and he took the lead from Carroll at the line on Lap 17. After leading 16 of the 20 laps, Carroll fell to second and Burton dropped to third as Morris streaked across the line for the victory. The Bandolero Bandits were led to the green flag in their 20-lap main event by Layton Sullivan, of Gaffney, S.C.

Sullivan paced the field until Carson Ferguson, of Mt. Holly, drove past Sullivan late in the race to capture his fifth feature win this year.. Ferguson finished ahead of Kodie Conner, of Kannapolis, and third-place Austin Green, of Concord. In the Legend Car Semi-Pro division, the drivers went flag-to-flag without a single caution as Kyle Hall, of Charlotte, was able to get his sixth win of the season.

There were several close calls throughout the race as multiple cars spun out, but the caution flag never waved, as all cars involved in the spins were able to immediately get back to racing. Hall weaved in and out of traffic as he pulled away from the front pack. Hall dominated the remainder of the 20-lap race.

Alex Hickham, of Willis, Texas, finished second and Alex Pacheco, of Rockwell, was third. Other feature winners included Scott Joy, of Lewisville, in the Bandolero Beginner Bandits division; Tyler Lester, of Dallas, N.C., in the Bandolero Outlaws division; Jeff Green, of Owensboro, Ky., in the Legend Car Masters division; and Sean Rayhall, of Austell, Ga., in the Legend Car Pro division.

The 18th annual Summer Shootout Series continues Monday, July 25, and Tuesday, July 26, as the season-long battles for the top spot in each division will come to a close in rounds nine and 10.

Tuesday night is championship night. The 2011 season will officially come to an end and a champion will be crowned in each of the seven divisions.
