Tim Russell wires United
Promoters Late Model Series race at Citrus County
Speedway |
June 5, 2011
From John Chance
Saturday night was the first trip of the year for the United
Promoters late model series to the Citrus County Speedway. The
newly formed series has had great success in it’s first 4 races
of the year, but this race would set a new benchmark for the
number of participants. 32 late models registered to try to race
their way into the 24 car starting field for the 100 lap
feature. The night would start off with time trial qualifying,
which saw the 84 of Wayne Anderson, set fast time with a fast
lap of 13.647 seconds. The top 20 drivers were locked into the
100 lap feature, with the remaining cars and drivers to battle
it out in a 20 lap B-main to determine the final 24 car starting
field.
The 17 of Darryl Shelnut would lead the B main to the green flag
and go on to dominate the 20 lap event. The 36 of Gary Padula
would see his chance of making the race almost fade away. While
running 2nd, the 19 of Ray Black made contact with Padula,
sending both cars for a spin. Black would take blame for the
incident, giving Padula back his 2nd position. Padula would go
on to finish in the 2nd position, and be the last driver to race
his way into the final 24 car starting field. The final 2
provisional starting spots were given to the highest series
points contender, and the highest local points contender, not
all ready locked into the race. This would put the 19 of Black,
and the 10 of Talon Craft into the big show.
Tim Russell would have luck on his side after qualifying.
Russell would draw the pole position for the start of the 100
lap feature, joining him on the outside front row was the 97 of
Patrick Staropoli. Russell would jump out to an early lead
before a caution on the 2nd lap for contact between the 30 of
Jesse Dutilly and the 88 of Justin Larson would slow the field.
Dutilly and Larson would be sent to the rear for the restart.
Russell would again jump out to a comfortable lead with
Staropoli in second and the 98 of local hot shoe Herb Neumann Jr
in 3rd. Neumann would take the 2nd position from Staropoli on
lap 20 and set his sights on the leader. Lap 32 saw caution fly
for contact between the 1 of Dale Sanders and the 36 of Gary
Padula, both would join the rear for the restart. On the
restart, Russell would now have the bright orange 98 of 5 time
track champion Neumann, filling his mirror. Neumann would never
leave the rear bumper of Russell’s 136 machine, looking high and
low for a lane, putting major pressure on the race leader. Lap
59 would see the field slow again for the spinning 36 of Gary
Padula. Russell would lead the way on the restart followed by
Neumann, the 33 of Daniel Webster, the 84 of Wayne Anderson, and
the 97 of Staropoli. Caution would fly quickly on lap 65 for
contact between the 20 of Anthony Sergi, 19 of Ray Black, and
the 07 of Steven Simpson. Russell would bring the field to the
restart, and Neumann would turn up the pressure with time
running out. The top two drivers would put on a driving clinic
for the rest of the race. Russell would not let the pressure get
to him, never making even the slightest of mistakes while
Neumann watched the laps wind down. Lap 84 would see the final
caution of the night for debris on the front straight, this
would give everyone one last shot to get it done. Russell
brought the field down for the final restart, and the top two
drivers would pick right back up where they left off. After
several good looks on the inside of Russell off of turn 2,
Neumann just couldn’t find the traction he needed to make the
winning pass. Russell would go on to take the victory and the
$3000 winners purse. Neumann would settle for 2nd, with Webster
3rd, Anderson 4th, and 13th place starter Scott Grossenbacher
rounding out the top 5. Russell thanked his crew, sponsors, and
the fans in victory lane. He also gave a special thanks to
Neumann for driving such a clean race, and not trying to use his
front bumper to gain an advantage. Neumann commented in his post
race interview, that his car just got to loose in the last 25
laps to make the winning pass, and congratulated Russell on a
great race. This was the best race the series has seen all year,
we can only hope the momentum keeps growing.

Russell
Shows the way at Auburndale
by Chuck Green
A near
capacity crowd filled the grandstands at Auburndale Speedway to
see race number two in the twelve race series of the newly
formed Florida United Promoters Late Model Series. This
series is the result of six hard working, dedicated race
promoters with a common goal of revitalizing late model racing
in the Sunshine State.
Twenty-Four teams would make the pull to Auburndale for this
race including race one winner Anthony Campi. Odds on
favorite, a regular at Auburndale, Jeff Scofield would also
expect to contend for the victory. Other notables
including the teams of Tim Russell, Joe Winchell, Wayne
Anderson, and Joe Boyd would surely be a factor in the outcome
of this race.
Auburndale would live up to its reputation as Florida's fastest
quarter mile Track with qualifying times below fifteen seconds.
Wayne Anderson would post the quickest time, with Tim Russell,
Jeff Scofield, Jesse Dutilly, and Joe Winchell rounding out the
top five. Per series rules a blind draw amongst the
fastest qualifiers would determine the starting grid for the 100
lap feature event.
The
crowd was excited as the cars lined up for the start of the race
as local favorite Jeff Scofield was on the pole, and would bring
the field to the green. Flanking Scofield on the outside
of row one was the car of Tim Russell, the winner of race one,
Anthony Campi would start third, fast qualifier Anderson would
start on the outside of row four in the eighth position.
As the cars came to the green, a four cr tangle on the front
stretch would cause race officials to rerack and start again.
The second attempt would fare better, Scofield would jump out
front with Russell on his rear bumper, and again the pace was
slowed by a single car spin in turn two. The restart would
see Scofield on the point with Russell, Campi, and the ride of
Jesse Dutilly all in pursuit. The running order would
remain the same through several more yellows, all for single car
spins, a restart on lap 40 would see Scofield on the inside,
Russell on the outside in a side by side battle for the lead,
the two drivers would stay like thisfor anotherfive laps when
Russell was able to clear Scofield with a pass on the outside.
Tim would build a three second lead over Scofield and seemed to
be on cruise control At the halfway point the order would
be Russell out front, Scofield second, Campi running third,
Dutilly fourth, and Daniel Webster rounding out thetop five.
The running order would remain the same until lap 67 when the
red flag came out for a grinding crash in turn one. Steve
Doer who was running in the top fifteen drove deep into turn
one, slower traffic forced Steve up and out of the groove, and
he slammed the outside wall nearly head on. Everyone held
their brath waiting for a sign that Doer was okay, after several
minutes Steve exited the car and assisted the wrecker crew to
get what was left of the car on a flatbed. Talking with
Steve Monday following the incident he told us they were able to
salvage the engine, transmission and seat, the rest of the car
would go to scrap. Most importantly, other than being very
sore from the impact Steve suffered no injuries from his wreck.
After a
thirty minute delay to clean the track, the cars would restart
with Russell on the point and Scofield close behind. Again
Russell would pull away from his pursuers and would never be
challenged again. A late caution would set up a green
white checker finish and Russell would not be denied taking the
victory. In victory lane Russell thanked his sponsors,
family and friends, and gave credit to the promoters that have
made this series possible. Jeff Scofield finished second
with Daniel Webster Third, Joe Winchell Fourth, and Wayne
Anderson completing the top five.
The next
stop for the United late model is April 2nd at Lake City
Speedway in Lake City, Florida. |

Florida United Promoters
Late Model Series
Published on January 25,
2011 by
Chuck Green
Late model pavement
racing in the state of Florida over the past few
years has at best, been “iffy”. Everyone
involved in the sport were left scratching their
heads trying to figure out why the premier
division in short track racing was in such
decline. It seems that the tracks outside of the
sunshine state were doing very well with their
late model programs, and promoters were anxious
to run their next scheduled event, so, what was
the problem in Florida?
First, lets’ look at
short track racing in general. No matter how you
shake it out, short track racing falls into the
category of “entertainment” meaning the people
that buy the tickets for the show expect to be
entertained, to enjoy the experience, not to be
left wanting more. Now how does this relate to
late model racing you ask? Simple, you can’t put
on a show with eight, or ten race cars, and
expect the fans to flock back for the next
scheduled show. This unfortunately seemed to be
the root of decline in Florida.
Race promotion is a
vicious circle, to get more race cars, you need
to raise the purse, in order to up the purse you
need more race cars, are you starting to see how
this works? With this in mind, any promoter will
tell you the Late Model Division is the premier
class to schedule at your track; the Late Models
will always draw a crowd. So, in Florida, it is
not unusual to see two or three late model races
scheduled on the same night at different tracks
as promoters struggled to get their fair share
of the market. Of course this strategy would
fail. Low car counts would bring smaller crowds
than expected, and leave the promoters to bite
the bullet and ultimately go in the hole to
cover the purse for the night. This left the
promoters with a sour taste concerning the
validity of the late models to draw a crowd, and
the fans would express their displeasure that
they paid good hard earned money to watch eight
late models race.
As the 2010 race season
was winding down, promoters throughout the state
all knew something had to happen, not to just to
keep the doors open at their facility, but for
the betterment of short track racing in general.
With this goal in mind, six promoters from six
different tracks came together to resolve the
differences, and work together. Thus the
foundation of the Florida United Promoters Late
Model Series.
First they worked out a
twelve race series, with each track hosting two
races, this will allow a touring series within
the state, and will be the only late model race
on any given week end throughout the state. Care
was taken to come up with a unified rules
package that will allow the teams to compete
without making major, costly changes to their
cars, a simple tire rule, all six tracks run
Hoosier tires, so all teams will race on
Hoosiers. Hoosier has also signed on as primary
sponsor for the series and will fund the points
fund. Promoters also hired a race and technical
director to take charge of the operation, and no
promoter will have anything to do with the
everyday nuts, and bolts of this series. The
purses will remain constant, and entry fees will
be the same one hundred dollars for every race.
Hoosier Tire will also be giving away two tires
at each race. Additional sponsors are said to be
in negotiations with the series, but there have
been no formal announcements at this point.
Will the formation of
this series bring the late models back to the
forefront of Florida short track racing? Will it
accomplish bringing the crowds back? Only time
will tell, whatever the results, this is a
positive step forward, not only for the
promoters, and late model teams, but for the
race fan that supports their local short
tracks. For more information on this new series

10:32
[Comment From Julie Julie : ]
seems to have been a wild night down there overall
tonight!
Tuesday February 15, 2011 10:32 Julie
10:32
There was some fluid on the track in turn four. Instead
of cleaning it up, track workers appeared to light it on
fire
instead
for it to burn off. That seems to have worked.
10:31
We are still under the red flag.
10:23
There are at least eight safety vehicles in turns three
and four to clean up this wreck. This will likely be a
long caution
period.
10:23
Track
officials
have
asked
for
security
to
report
to the
Turn 4
area,
around
the
wreck.
10:21
The red
flag is
now out.
10:21
Jason
Boyd,
Joe
Winchell
and
Derrick
Wood
were
involved
and have
not been
able to
drive
away.
10:21
Caution is out.
10:20

wreck in
